Gomes Kopp and her husband, Alyssa’s stepfather, are German but have a home on the Greek island of Crete. They had been adopted by a German family, and Gomes Kopp had offered to bring them over. Gomes Kopp was allowed into an aircraft loading area one time, but has not been allowed back since.

For a few hundred years, money poured in from the church, which was eager to expand its influence in the Dodecanese, this group of islands so close to Turkey that on a map it looks like a jeweled choker wrapped around the country’s southwestern coast. Greece is often hit by wildfires during the summer but climate change has led to more extreme heatwaves across southern Europe, raising concerns that tourists will stay away. Wildfires also raged on the island of Corfu, off the west cost of Greece, and Evia island, near the capital of Athens. Civil protection authorities warned of extreme risk of wildfires in Rhodes and on the island of Crete on Tuesday.

A previously unknown painting by Jackson Pollock was discovered last week, per officials. Authorities found the painting in an art-trafficking bust, Bulgarian National Radio first reported. Experts estimated the painting could rack up to $54 million at an auction, according to BNR. A photo of part of the painting can be viewed at Bulgarian National Radio's website. Previously, Pollock's most expensive painting sold for $61,161,000, in 2021, according to the art market website Mutual Art.
